Fire & Fury
As winter sets in we seek warmth and comfort from fire, whilst several religions use this time of year to celebrate light, generated by the biggest fire of them all, the sun. Our programme explores how fire and fury have inspired some of the most evocative and thrilling music in the repertoire, from Haydn's turbulent period in the 18th century to early 20th century ballet and works referencing heriocs in two World Wars. Something for everyone!

- Haydn, Symphony No.59 (Feuersymphonie)
- Holst, The Perfect Fool Ballet Suite

Pure Passion
Join us for a concert of unbridled passion!
Beethoven poured intense passion into his only concerto for a solo instrument other than the piano and demanded the same from the performers. The violin concerto fills a complete half of the concert, testament to the emotional journey upon which you will be taken.
Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony was entitled ‘Pathétique’ after his death, but quite possibly the title refers to the Grande Passion Pathétique of French Opera - less of our ‘pathetic’. Tchaikovsky declared “I love it more than any of my musical offspring”. Undoubtedly, this, too, is a passionate and highly emotional outpouring of deeply held feelings - bring a hanky!
Programme:
- Beethoven, Violin Concerto in D major, with soloist Andrew Long
- Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 ‘Pathétique’
Doors open 2.30pm. Concert starts 3pm.
All Abroad!
Trips abroad are often memorable and recorded through photographs etc. However, several composers have left legacies of their visits to other countries through their musical output. Berlioz’s great love of Italy, Rome in particular, inspired two of our chosen works. The raw excitement of a Roman Carnival, and the symphonic representation of wandering through scenic Italy, “Harold in Italy” for solo viola, harp and orchestra, inspired by Byron’s ‘Childe Harold’, provide a fantastic feast of vibrant and reflective music for audience and players alike!
By contrast, Joseph Haydn’s professional life brought him to work in England where he was commissioned to compose works for two key cities, Oxford and London. It is for the latter that he penned his final symphonies and the last of those, No. 104, that we will be performing - by way of some light relief!
Programme details
- Berlioz, Roman Carnival Overture
- Berlioz, Harold in Italy, with soloist Suzie Fawden
- Haydn, ‘London’ Symphony No. 104
Vives 'Les Olympiques'!
Richmondshire Orchestra will be under starter's orders for a special 'Olympics-2024'-themed concert, featuring music by composers from countries ranking top in the 1924 Paris Olympics medal table.Representing France on what will be 'Bastille Day' we have Offenbach's Overture to 'Orpheus in the Underworld', with its quintessential Can Can; from the US, Gershwin's 'American in Paris' and from Italy, Rossini's 'William Tell' Overture.
Meanwhile, what concert dedicated to the Olympic Games would be complete without the iconic theme to Vangelis' British film 'Chariots of Fire'?
Programme:
- Rossini, Overture 'William Tell'
- Jarnefelt, Praeludium
- Arnold, English Dances (set 2, Numbers 5-8, Opus 33)
- Vangelis, Theme from 'Chariots of Fire'
- Sibelius, Karelia Suite
- Offenbach, Overture 'Orpheus in the Underworld'
- Gershwin, An American in Paris
Pure Emotion
“Beethoven only wrote one opera.” Well, one re-written several times with a name change for good measure. The early version, ‘Leonore’ has been described as delivering the story with the purest emotion.
Tchaikovsky, whilst renowned for producing works of exhilarating emotion, turned to the purer musical times of the Rococo period for inspiration in his Variations for Cello and Orchestra, and in doing so composed some of his most intimate and electrifying music. By contrast, in his Fifth symphony, be ready to experience wide-ranging emotions, from the dreamy 2nd movement to the thrilling power of its finale, that make Tchaikovsky so popular with performers and audiences alike.
We greatly look forward to the return of Jeremy Harbottle to perform the Rococo Variations with us.
